More than most productions, the Center Rep one really accentuates the fun of a musical that’s all about celebration, Director Marc Jacobs and an awfully strong cast make it marvelously funny wherever possible, abetted by comical choreography by Robyn Tribuzi and some delightfully over-the-top costumes by Maggi Yule, In the musical’s wispy book by Catherine Johnson, bride-to-be Sophie wants to invite her father to her wedding but has no idea who her father is because her mother, Donna, won’t talk about it, Getting hold of her mother’s old diary from her free-spirit youth in the late 1970s, Sophie decides to invite all three of the guys Donna mentions having sex with about nine colorful / foot stretcher / stretch / foot stretcher / ballet stretcher / arch enhancer / arch stretcher / dance stretcher / sho months before Sophie was born, Then it’s just a matter of trying to figure out which of them is her biological father without anyone catching on to what she’s doing..

Everything happens backstage on the opening night of a downright atrocious play called “Robbin’ Hood of the Old West.” The leading lady, Jessica Cranshaw (an intentionally untalented Deborah Rosengaus) can’t act her way out of a paper bag. But there might be hope for the show after Jessica is poisoned while taking her curtain call. The leads are universally strong from dynamic, Ethel Merman-ish Sasha Motalygo as spunky producer Carmen Bernstein, to pert, fresh-faced Brandy Collazo as Jessica’s understudy, Niki Harris, and Raymond Mendonca as the arrogant, self-serving British director Christopher Belling (looking dashing in a black tux with flamboyant black-and-white cape). Also holding their own in a very crowded field of actors are earnest Christopher M. Nelson and vibrant Katherine Stein as the formerly married songwriting team of Fox and Hendricks.
